{"id":8275,"date":"2014-10-13T17:04:35","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T14:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imss.ems-studio.com\/?page_id=8275"},"modified":"2014-11-06T11:13:59","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T09:13:59","slug":"what-is-multiple-sclerosis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mssociety.org.il\/en\/what-is-multiple-sclerosis\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Multiple Sclerosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>What is Multiple Sclerosis?<br \/>\n?<\/strong><strong>\u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4 \u05de\u05d4\u05d9\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system affecting the brain\u2019s ability to send and receive messages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s called \u201cMultiple\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because it damages more than one area of the brain and\/or the spinal cord<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s called \u201cSclerosis\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because MS \u2013 as Multiple Sclerosis is commonly known \u2013 causes hardening of the tissue (the tissue becomes sclerotic)<br \/>\n\u2013 causes damage to myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibers]\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Why do we need to learn about Multiple Sclerosis?<br \/>\n?\u05de\u05d3\u05d5\u05e2 \u05e6\u05e8\u05d9\u05da \u05dc\u05dc\u05de\u05d5\u05d3 \u05e2\u05dc \u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Because Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a common disease of the central nervous system.<br \/>\nAbout 3 million people around the world and about 5,000 people in Israel suffer from MS.<br \/>\nNo MS cure has been found yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Multiple Sclerosis typically affects:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Young adults<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In most cases MS affects people aged 15 to 45.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of powerful diagnostic methods today, children as young as 8-years old are being diagnosed with MS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MS affects the whole family<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The disease may have a strong impact on those closest to the person who has MS.<\/p>\n<p>They may be required to share the financial burden, and take on other duties at home, while also helping the person who has MS cope with the disease emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>The information in this brochure on how to cope with and treat the disease are not a substitute for a professional conversation between the patient and their physician.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>How does Multiple Sclerosis affect the central nervous system?<br \/>\n?\u05db\u05d9\u05e6\u05d3 \u05e4\u05d5\u05d2\u05e2\u05ea \u05d4\u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05d4\u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4 \u05d1\u05de\u05e2\u05e8\u05db\u05ea \u05d4\u05e2\u05e6\u05d1\u05d9\u05dd \u05d4\u05de\u05e8\u05db\u05d6\u05d9\u05ea\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The brain functions like a telephone exchange<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most healthy nerves are insulated by myelin<\/strong><br \/>\nMyelin is a fatty substance that helps messages smoothly flow without interruption along nerve fibers, known as neural pathways.<br \/>\n<strong>In MS, the myelin breaks down and is replaced by scar tissue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scar tissue may distort messages or even block them.<br \/>\nControl over the body\u2019s movement is impaired because the messages don\u2019t reach their destination correctly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It sends electrical messages along nerve fibers to every part of the body.<br \/>\nThese messages control all our voluntary and involuntary movement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The cause of Multiple Sclerosis remains a mystery<br \/>\nBut there are cases of MS in which the following occurs:<br \/>\n\u05d4\u05d2\u05d5\u05e8\u05dd \u05dc\u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4 \u05e0\u05d5\u05ea\u05e8 \u05e2\u05d3\u05d9\u05d9\u05df \u05d1\u05d2\u05d3\u05e8 \u05ea\u05e2\u05dc\u05d5\u05de\u05d4<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Immune Response<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The body\u2019s immune system defends the body against invaders such as viruses and bacteria.<br \/>\nIn people who have MS, this immune system may start attacking the body\u2019s own cells &#8211; in this case the myelin sheath cells.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear what triggers an immune response of this type.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An attack of viruses or bacteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The cause of MS might be exposure to a common virus or bacteria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are cases of MS where two of the following exist:<\/strong><br \/>\nAn attack by a virus or bacteria triggers an immune system response.<\/p>\n<p>A virus or bacteria takes over control of cells.<\/p>\n<p>The body\u2019s defense system makes a mistake and attacks both the attacker and the body\u2019s own cells.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Some myths about Multiple Sclerosis<br \/>\n\u05db\u05de\u05d4 \u05de\u05d9\u05ea\u05d5\u05e1\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05dc \u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Myth: <\/strong>Multiple Sclerosis causes death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> The life expectancy of most people with MS is normal or nearly normal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth: <\/strong>MS eventually ends in paralysis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> Most MS sufferers are able to move about on their own. However, some will need a walking stick, crutches, a wheelchair, or other type of mobility aid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth:<\/strong> MS is a contagious disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> There is no evidence that an MS sufferer can transmit the disease to another person through random or sexual touch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myth:<\/strong> There is no way of helping a person suffering from MS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> There are now drug treatments that slow down the MS process in some sufferers.<br \/>\nThere are also medications that help alleviate many of the symptoms of the disease.<br \/>\nA change in diet can help improve how people feel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Multiple Sclerosis symptoms differ from person to person <\/strong><strong>and from time to time in the same person<br \/>\n\u05ea\u05e1\u05de\u05d9\u05e0\u05d9 \u05d4\u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05d4\u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4 \u05e9\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd \u05dc\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Symptoms may be light or severe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Muscle stiffness or spasms (spasticity)<\/li>\n<li>Eye problems (vision loss, blurry or double vision, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Weakness or extreme fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Shuffling (dragging of legs), a shaky or unstable walk<\/li>\n<li>Tremors or involuntary movements<\/li>\n<li>Poor coordination<\/li>\n<li>Loss of control over the bladder or bowel movements, or problems with sex<\/li>\n<li>Problems with memory, concentration or in the speed of problem solving skills<\/li>\n<li>Speech problems<\/li>\n<li>Partial or complete paralysis of some part of the body<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The disease course of MS also varies:<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are two basic types of Multiple Sclerosis<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The isolated attack disease course<\/strong><br \/>\nHere symptoms burst out and then become weaker or perhaps even disappear for months or years<\/li>\n<li><strong>The progressive disease course<\/strong><br \/>\nHere symptoms build up and become worse over time<br \/>\nThere are cases in which the isolated attack type of MS turns into progressive or advanced MS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis may be difficult<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Sometimes years may pass from the onset of the first symptoms and until a conclusive diagnosis is reached. This is because:<br \/>\n\u05d0\u05d1\u05d7\u05d5\u05df \u05d4\u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05d4\u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4 \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5\u05d9 \u05dc\u05d4\u05d9\u05d5\u05ea \u05e7\u05e9\u05d4<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Early symptoms may be ignored<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In many cases the early symptoms are light, so the person does not seek medical advice.<br \/>\nSymptoms may also appear and then disappear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other diseases are all too similar <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other diseases of the central nervous system may present with identical symptoms to those of MS.<br \/>\nThere are certain mental health problems that can also manifest with symptoms similar to those of MS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>How the physician reaches a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis <\/strong><strong>Based on the symptoms, the doctor may:<br \/>\n\u05db\u05d9\u05e6\u05d3 \u05de\u05d2\u05d9\u05e2 \u05d4\u05e8\u05d5\u05e4\u05d0 \u05dc\u05d0\u05d1\u05d7\u05e0\u05d4 \u05e9\u05dc \u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Investigate the patient\u2019s full medical history <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will help the physician get a comprehensive picture of the person\u2019s state of health.<br \/>\nHe or she will also ask about the symptoms and when they started.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check the functioning of the nervous system<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this purpose, the doctor is likely to check the patient\u2019s reflexes, balance, coordination, and vision, and look for areas of numbness.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor will also order tests to assist in the diagnosis, which may include one or more of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), which gives detailed images of the brain and the spinal cord.<\/li>\n<li>A CT or Computerized Tomography scan, which uses X-ray waves to photograph the brain and the spinal cord.<\/li>\n<li>Evoked potential (EP) tests to measure the speed and accuracy of the central nervous system\u2019s response to a given stimulus.<\/li>\n<li>A spinal tap, also known as a lumbar puncture, which checks for signs of the disease in the spinal fluid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Two basic signs serve as confirmation of Multiple Sclerosis:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Signs of the disease in different parts of the nervous system<\/li>\n<li>At least two separate outbreaks of the disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Multiple Sclerosis is treatable<br \/>\n<strong>There is currently no way to cure MS.<br \/>\nBut you can do many things to help maintain your independence, feel comfortable and continue working.<br \/>\n\u05d8\u05e8\u05e9\u05ea \u05e0\u05e4\u05d5\u05e6\u05d4 \u05e0\u05d9\u05ea\u05e0\u05ea \u05dc\u05d8\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05dc<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Treatment of MS should include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Maintaining good health habits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is extremely important that you take very good care of yourself and try to avoid infections and other diseases. Make sure you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take regular physical exercise.<br \/>\n(You should consult with your doctor before starting a physical exercise program).<\/li>\n<li>Eat nutritious food. Your daily diet must include elements from each of the five food groups.<\/li>\n<li>Get enough sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Get immediate treatment for any infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Medication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many drugs for the treatment of MS and its symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physiotherapy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Physical exercise programs can help you regain control over muscles after severe attacks.<br \/>\nPhysiotherapy in a pool (hydrotherapy) can be especially conducive to MS patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Occupational Therapy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This type of therapy can help you remain independent for as long as possible if you become disabled in some way.<br \/>\nOccupational therapists can, for example, teach you new ways to dress yourself, cook, drive, and so on.<br \/>\nThey can also teach you how to use special equipment and make changes in your home, workplace or car, so you are safer and more comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speech Therapy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This therapy is for MS patients who find it difficult to talk because of muscle weakness and a lack of coordination. Speech therapy with a communication clinician can help improve skills in communication.<br \/>\n<strong>Counseling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Individual and group therapy can help MS sufferers and their families deal with depression, anxiety and the physical limitations caused by MS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>[Frequently Asked Questions \/ FAQs]\nSome questions and answers<br \/>\n\u05e9\u05d0\u05dc\u05d5\u05ea \u05d5\u05ea\u05e9\u05d5\u05d1\u05d5\u05ea<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are some people who may be more prone than others to develop MS. Among them are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People in the 18-40 age group<\/li>\n<li>Women<\/li>\n<li>People of northern European origin<\/li>\n<li>People who live in temperate climates (the closer you get to the Equator, the fewer the cases of MS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Is MS hereditary?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Generally, it is not hereditary.<br \/>\nBut it would seem that there are families who are more prone to MS than others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can MS affect the mind?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In some cases MS does affect the mind and emotions.<br \/>\nSo, for example, people with MS may experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mood swings<\/li>\n<li>Confusion<\/li>\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you feel any of these symptoms, consult your physician.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To what extent can symptoms worsen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is impossible to predict how symptoms will develop and worsen.<\/p>\n<p>Each MS case runs a different course than any other.<\/p>\n<p>There are people, for example, who reach a stage where they can no longer walk, whereas for others the disease manifests in light symptoms only, with no disability or with only minor disability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about my sex life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many people suffering from MS are able to enjoy a completely normal sex life. Others might encounter problems of some sort.<br \/>\nMainly, it\u2019s important to maintain open communication and flexibility when it comes to sexual expression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will I be able to have children?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, except in cases where severe disability causes a problem.
